Sustainable development has been defined by The United Nations (UN) as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

In 2016, the UN released 17 Sustainable Development Goals to show business how it can contribute to solving the world’s biggest sustainable development challenges. Since their inception, Transurban has been sharing how we are responding to the Goals and building a more sustainable business.

In our 2017 Sustainability Report we highlighted the sustainability development goals that are material to our business and provided more detail on our progress. Our report provides explanations on the relevance and potential contributions to these goals, as well as describing initiatives addressing specific sustainability development goals and targets. We encourage other companies to do the same, as recent research from The Conversation found that majority of Australian companies are not meaningfully disclosing the way these goals are measured or reporting their contributions.

If your company wants to get involved, the UN List of Actions provide a great starting point for the journey to a more sustainable future.
